About Scar Revision

As a common skin blemish, scars can be located anywhere on the face and body. In some cases, a scar is a reminder of a wound that once existed or another condition that caused a disruption to the skin’s surface. While most scars are not a worry, some scars are unappealing and unsightly. They can be too big or too wide, bumpy, dark, raised, or recessed. Depending on where the scar is located and its condition, nonsurgical scar revision may be needed to improve its appearance. At kind Health Group, we utilize microneedling and Cynosure Icon laser technology to reduce scarring and unwanted stretch marks. If you are interested in scheduling a private consultation, call our office in Encinitas, CA today.

Types of Scars

There are multiple types of scars. The type you have may determine the treatment approach we use to address your concerns. The most common scars are:

  • Superficial Scars
These are the subtlest type of scars. They do not cause any issue other than an unsightly appearance.
  • Keloid Scars
These scars are bigger in size and can be sometimes painful. The skin around the scar tends to be discolored and grows beyond the edges of where the wound once existed.
  • Hypertrophic Scars
This type of scar can also be big. They may be thicker and get larger over time; however, they do not usually grow beyond the wound site.
  • Contracture Scars
This type of scar is considered more complex as it forms over a larger area of skin. A burn is an example of this type of scar. Many times a contracture scar feels taut and also limits movement in some patients.
  • Stretch Marks
When the skin is pulled or stretched due to rapid growth during puberty, pregnancy or extreme weight gain, unsightly lines (which are actually small scars on the body) appear. Through advanced technology, we are able to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

Scar Revision Ideal Candidates

Anyone who has a scar that is bothersome, unsightly, or causes embarrassment and insecurity may want to learn more about scar revision treatment. It is important for potential patients at Kind Health Group who get this procedure to know that while this treatment may improve the appearance of a scar and reduce its size, it will not make it totally disappear. The type of treatment chosen will be dependent on where your scar is located, the type of scar it is, and the size, shape, and depth.

Scar Revision Procedure Technique

Our MedSpa offers two treatments to address scarring: microneedling and laser skin resurfacing. Both of these treatments are safe and effective approaches that help reduce the color and visibility of a scar, without surgery. They are also very effective in treating stretch marks. Lastly, if you have a recessed scar or one that appears "pitted," we may suggest a dermal filler product to create a more natural, even complexion.

What to Expect from Scar Revision

Our MedSpa team will take our time to go over all aftercare instructions and can recommend skin care routines to aid in faster healing for optimal results. Please remember that the scar will not be entirely eliminated, but most scar revision procedures can create a natural, softer appearance.

Scar Revision - Frequently Asked Questions

How much does scar revision cost?
The cost of scar revision will depend on the area being treated, type of scar, and the number of treatments needed to attain your goals. During your first visit, we will create a custom treatment plan and then estimate your costs.

Does scar revision eliminate the original scar?
No. Scar revision will help diminish the size and appearance of your original scar but may not eliminate it completely. Multiple treatments may be needed to attain optimal results and although scar revision does not entirely rid the original scar, it will dramatically help with minimizing the overall appearance of the scar.

Can scar revision be combined with another procedure?
Yes. Many patients opt to combine another treatment with their scar revision. Popular options include dermal fillers and PRP therapy. During your private consultation, be sure to discuss all your cosmetic concerns with our MedSpa team so we can create a treatment plan that works best for you.

Does scar revision hurt?
Since scar revision is minimally noninvasive, patients typically do not experience great discomfort during their procedure. However, after your treatment is complete, you may experience redness, soreness, or itching but these symptoms will dissipate in a few days.
