What is Skin Lesion Removal?

You may notice small growths or skin sections that appear different from the surrounding skin. These are called lesions, which may develop anywhere on your body. You may want a lesion removed if it is unattractive, painful, or irritating. While most skin lesions are harmless and noncancerous, a lesion that has changed over time might need to be biopsied to check for cancerous cells. If you have a lesion you would like analyzed or removed, schedule a consultation at Kind Health Group. Most lesions can be removed quickly and safely in a treatment room at our Encinitas, CA, practice.

Skin Lesion Causes

Most skin lesions are caused by an infection, like the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes warts, or systemic infection (shingles or chicken pox), leading to lesions throughout the body. Skin lesions might also be caused by genetics, like moles, freckles, and birthmarks. Allergies or skin sensitivities may also cause skin lesions. Lesions on the skin are typically separated into two types: primary and secondary:

  • Primary lesions are present when you are born or appear throughout your lifetime. These include: Blisters, Birthmarks, Macules, Pustules, Papules, Nodules, Rashes, Wheals
  • Secondary skin lesions are brought on by an irritation or infection of a primary lesion. The most common secondary lesions are: Crusts (scabs), Ulcers, Scales, Scars, Skin atrophy

Skin Lesion Symptoms

A lesion may not cause any symptoms and may simply appear different from the rest of your skin. However, some lesions can cause symptoms, such as burning, itching, or discomfort. An elevated lesion can also lead to irritation if it rubs against clothing or skin.

Lesion Removal Options

There are many options for removal depending on the type of lesion present. Surgical excision may be recommended to cut out the lesion and surrounding skin. This is often the chosen method for moles, cysts, or other forms of lesions that may be precancerous or cancerous. Stitches will likely be needed, and, in most cases, a healing ointment is used. The skin heals within a week or two. Superficial lesions may also be removed with a surgical blade that "shaves" away the imperfection. We may also suggest laser therapies, oral medications, or topical ointment to reduce symptoms or the appearance of lesions.

Remove Unwanted Lesions

Nearly every adult has some type of skin lesion that they'd prefer to eliminate. While most lesions do not require treatment (unless they begin to bleed, itch, become inflamed, or may be cancerous), you might want them removed for cosmetic reasons. Kind Health Group will provide a complete evaluation of your skin lesion(s) and talk about treatment options. Contact our Encinitas, CA practice to find out more about skin lesion removal or schedule a consultation.
